‘Triple Vision’ 26.11.24 featuring Kate Miller (Body Verse) Mix + Q&A

Joining ‘Triple Vision’ this month’ is Kate Miller, a selector with a sonic pallet which stretches wide & deep, with an affinity for low-frequency & percussive sounds. Kate has graced dance floors with her effortlessly genre-blurring sets at some of the most forward-thinking clubs & events locally, throughout Europe, Asia and beyond including Panorama Bar, Tresor, De School, Organik Festival & many more. Kate’s work also extends to curation, heading up the Body Verse label, events & mix series, plus running events for a decade in Berlin & now Baze Naarm locally.

Q&A with Kate Miller

Q1. Your sets are known for flowing seamlessly across moods & sonic palettes. Tell us a bit about the mix you have put together and the inspiration, story or thread that connects the tracks you have selected.

A: The mix I’ve put together is deeper, calmer, and more patient than what I usually play. I wanted to take the listener on a bit of a journey—something introspective, that slowly moves toward the light. It’s inspired by recent experiences at smaller, more intimate events, where those early morning moments of connection are heightened. The tracks I’ve chosen play with contrasts—light and dark, melodic and percussive. I also wanted to shine a light on some artists and sounds I’m loving right now, mixing new discoveries (Vardae, Polygonia, Nicola Cruz) with some timeless favourites (Djrum, Dorisburg, Wata Igarashi).

Q2. You have played at some incredible festivals & clubs locally, across Europe & Asia and have also been involved on the party curation side. What elements do you feel are necessary for creating a memorable experience for the dancers in a club or festival environment?

For me, creating a memorable experience is all about setting up an environment where people feel free to let go. Curating the lineup and the flow of the night is a big part of that, but sound quality and lighting are so underrated. Bad sound or lighting (especially if it’s too bright) can totally kill the vibe for me—and for others, even if they don’t realise it. Beyond that, the way the space feels and how inclusive and welcoming the atmosphere is really sets the tone. People need to feel comfortable to truly let go. But the real magic happens with the energy shared between the crowd and the artists. That back-and-forth is what makes a night unforgettable. The artist has to be in sync with the crowd, and everyone on the dancefloor needs to respect each other’s space.

Q3. What have been some of the biggest growth opportunities or learnings from running your label Body Verse? Is there anything on the horizon for the label you can share?

Running Body Verse has been such a lesson in balancing creativity with logistics. I’ve also learned a lot about myself—like how slow I can be! Hoping to pick up the pace in 2025 though. I’m still figuring out how to juggle timelines and budgets while keeping the label’s vision intact. Next up, I’m planning the next release and a couple of local events. I’m especially excited about collaborating with some other local crews—it’s always fun working together.

Q4. Community is central to any thriving music scene. How have the Berlin & Naarm/Melbourne scenes you've been a part of shaped your perspective and what do you think each scene could learn from one another?

Both Berlin and Naarm/Melbourne have had a massive influence on how I think about music and community. Berlin gave me longevity, consistency, and the space to do my own thing. When I first moved there in 2011, the city felt so open and welcoming. Naarm/Melbourne, on the other hand, has a different energy—it’s all about DIY spirit and a tight-knit community. Promoters here work so hard to make their events not just happen but stand out and feel special. It can feel cliquey at first, but once you take a breath, meet a few people, and put yourself out there, you can start to feel at home. I also love the crossover between live music and electronic scenes here—something that’s pretty rare in Berlin, where it’s mostly DJs. Naarm’s got some of the best day parties and festivals in the world, while Berlin is unbeatable for those long, dark, late-night, proper clubbing sessions (with amazing sound, of course).

Q5. Which artists, projects, labels, or releases are exciting you right now?

I’m loving the stuff coming from labels like Nervous Horizon and Annulled just to name a couple of examples. Slowfoam’s productions feel super unique and personal, and MSJY brings such dynamic energy to her sets. Locally, Naarm/Melbourne’s labels like Butter Sessions and Animalia are killing it as usual. A recent fave that I’ve had on repeat is Elemental by Zara. I feel lucky to be part of such a vibrant mix of sounds and ideas.
