Q&A with Modulor
Q1: Tell us about the mix you have prepared. Was there a particular mood or feeling you wanted to communicate & are there any stand out tracks for you from your selections?
A: Lately, I am listening to a lot of percussive sounds, in many different genres. I wanted to create an atmospheric mix suitable for this mix series, but also bringing some groove to it. I recently came across a remix by Dinamarca from the 'Space Track' track I used to listen to when I was young, which has a fun dancy twist added to it.
Q2: Being an avid record collector, what is your approach to the discovery of new music? Do you have a preference to dig through stores or online?
A: I prefer going to physical stores and digging what's been curated by the shop owner. There is a reason why we tend to go to one shop or the other, right? I don't like spending time on the screen, but I do also buy records online, either on discogs, bandcamp or other platforms. I buy digital too, mostly on bandcamp.
Q3: What have you learnt or encountered recently that you found inspiring?
A: Living overseas for a few months last year, I learnt about some African musical genres. What made me most attracted to it is the way people dance to that music. I would be mesmerized looking at the people doing the craziest footwork moves. I don't see much embodied movement in our dancefloors and that was definitely something that struck me ever since. I like to go clubbing to dance, move, and release energy. It's some sort of therapy.
Q4: What's something within a community you're a part of that you'd like people to know about?
A: Since I came back to Naarm/Melbourne in January, I've been finding it hard to build my own community. Nevertheless I've been attending a few incredible and diverse community driven dance parties, and that's what makes this city so vibrant. It's been a good reminder to me. Besides that, I was deeply immersed in a small village recently in Namibia building a residence for children (I am an architect), the community there is so much more connected. I'm quite over connecting through social media, I miss the scale of small places to connect easily with peers in real life. But by saying that, last year I had the opportunity to go to a small doof in Spain with likeminded people, amazing musicians and a really nice vibe in general. I am very happy to still be part of that community.
