Q&A with Oso Feo

Q1: When you were selecting tracks for this mix, were there particular energies, atmospheres, or inner states you were channeling? What kind of ideal space or environment do you imagine for the listener?

A: I really wanted to channel these complex feelings I had after closing out The Ever Afters Campout. I imagined this set as an imaginary 3rd hour of a 4hr closing set that I was prepping for at the campout that I didn't get a chance to play. So with this intention in mind, I attempted to slow things down a bit and slowly ramp up to a bigger climax that would have happened at the campout or at one of the renegades I throw. I love the idea of creating pause after a banging 2 hours to give people a reset and need to want more intensity at the end of any set I do.

Q2: SutroFM feels deeply intentional, what values sit at the heart of what the community is building? In your experience, what sustains a DIY scene through inevitable challenges?

A: There are so many values that come to mind when I think of SutroFM, and I think I wouldn't be able to encapsulate them all in a single thought. One thing is certain though, our intention is to build something better than what we've had when we were baby ravers. It was the wild west back then and was very very cringe.

The biggest challenge we experience is generating income to pay for our rent, but lately community members have started donating money to us and that's been heartwarming to see.

Q3: Looking back on the past few months of shows and events, was there an experience that stood out or particularly stayed with you? What are you excited about for the rest of the year?

A: Hmm well I think Ever Afters has stood out the most so far. It's by far one of the most intentional queer campouts I've ever been to. It is so inspiring to see people so happy and putting everything they have into their sets. It's truly one of my favorite places to be.

For the upcoming year... I'm quite excited about Dripping on the East Coast! I think that festival is also a very special one. Lastly, I'm very excited to organize a renegade around August! Renegades bring me so much life and keep me excited about music.

Q4: What's special about the creative community in the Bay Area & how have you seen it shift or adapt over time? Are there any artists/labels/collectives/spaces etc. you find particularly inspiring?

A: What's wild about the Bay is you'll meet and befriend some of the most talented artists in the States and no one in the global scene knows who they are. I get to experience and see these artists grow and sometimes expand out as soon as people start finding out about them. It's lovely.

In terms of sounds and styles, I've experienced the scene change so much over time. It's just an inevitable thing, people get older, they move out, and younger kids pop up with their inspo. Something I've been really excited about lately is all of these DIY spaces that have been popping up. It feels like there's this fresh DIY energy slowly coming back into the city. Parties are getting better, and there are more vacant tech buildings, it's a beautiful thing to see.

Current labels in the Bay I'm digging are:

No Bias, Squirrels on Film, Club Moniker, Vaguetracks
