‘Triple Vision’ 17.06.25 feat. Beltrac Mix & Q&A

Boorloo, Perth DJ & producer Julian Tonkin AKA Beltrac joins us this month for a Q&A and guest mix on Triple Vision.

Beltrac’s production morphs between downtempo, trance inspired cuts, dub-infused atmospheric groovers, to high energy prog-laded heaters, all whilst keeping a familiar thread throughout. With a solid output of releases on local and international labels such Dream Software, Ono Records, Neptune Discs, Companion, Haŵs, Daisy Records and Terrazzo over the past 18 months or so, we’ll be keeping a keen ear out as to where Beltrac takes his sonics next.

Q&A with Beltrac

Q1. What would you envision as the ideal listening environment for this mix? Are there any tracks which are particular stand outs for you?

I envision the perfect listening environment to be a small bar that’s candle lit. It feels like a mood setter that builds into the possibility of a rave. This is the sorta music I love to play/ listen to on a night out! Can also be perfect for your headphones too.

Q2. Your production is able to traverse a varied range of influences and BPMs, whilst still feeling cohesive. Is there a particular time in electronic music history or a global scene that has had the biggest impact on the development of your sound?

There’s one track I’ve always gone back to (ever since I was 11 years old), that is First Snow - Emancipator. I’ve been listening to this track ever since I heard it in a surf edit I watched. Feels a culmination of all the elements of electronic music that I love - glitchy jungle breaks, dub chords, emotional melodies and interesting music structure. The remix by Ooah is equally as good in my opinion, it depends on the day which one I prefer the most. I used to discover a lot of music through surf clips, so I would say that’s where I grew a solid appreciation to electronic music.

Q3. The last 18 months has seen a solid run of releases on a number of excellent local and international imprints. What are you currently focusing on or excited about, in or outside of music?

Very kind of you to say! Just keeping my artist integrity is the main thing. Focussing on blending some new styles in whilst maintaining my core sound. I also have been playing Futsal twice a week which has been really fun, been super excited to continue that whilst I’m able!!

Q4. How has the local scene and community in Boorloo influenced your approach to music production and collaboration, if at all? Are there any local artists, labels, or collectives etc. that you’re particularly resonating with?

The Boorloo scene is super fun and there’s loads of energy amongst it. James & Warwick at Ono Records have had a superb run of parties and events, I’ve really been digging their stuff for a minute. Button released a sick new EP on Backtrack with a tight remix by Aphid, really slick production - instant cop. Yesna as well has been making waves, excited to see what he’s got in store for the future. I’ve missed probably a lot of people, but those are a few I’ve been loving recently (for mix’s/ releases & events). There’s some really talented people in the mix here, excited to see how the scene continues to flourish.
